Do you have any information or lawn mower product reviews on Non-Motor Lawn Mowers or those “green technology”, “eco-friendly” type grass mowers?

Do they work?

How good do they work compared to the gas powered or electric mowers?

Could I really use it on my lawn for an ongoing basis and main mower?

Why should I buy one?

OK, hold on a minute, I’ll tell you.

OK.

The product I’ve tested is the Fiskars Brand rolling revolving lawn mower, the best model they had available for sale in 2019 – 2020.  I think it is the 18 inch width grass cutter with a grass guard on the top of the mower.

I have been using it for over one year as my only grass cutter.  I hve used zero turn riding mowers, gas powered walk behind push/propelled mowers, electric walk behind push/propelled mowers, non-motor pull revolving mowers, scissors, saws, and other tools to cut the grass on the property lawn grass for about 9 years, nine years.  I use the Fiskars non-motor grass cutter mainly on the 4 acre property that has approximately 1 quarter acre of grass to cut.

The cutter works. I work.  The cutter moves as fast as I move.  I have modified the grass cutter for my preferred design and method of use.  For example, I did not install the handle bars that come with the base cutter that rolls on wheels.  I attached a rope, and I pull the cutter instead of pushing it.  This method works well for me.

As long as whoever is cutting the grass during the summer, keeps up with it, has the time to do the work, and is rewarded appropriately, it works for cutting most standard lawns.

I have found that when I don’t keep up with the grass cutting of the entire lawn area, some of the area is golden stems of wheat looking grass seeds.  Of course, no body wants grass seeds growing in their front lawns.  So, I have to cut that by hand.

Product Improvements?

If the manufacturer made a model similar to a field plow that is larger than the 18” inch wide version, that would most likely work on the long grass also.

Yes, it is hard work and a work out.  So, if you are elderly, not physically able, or limited; you might need to hire a younger person to use it.  For example, someone interested in training for their football, soccor, baseball, track, cross-country, or other athletic sport.  In the fieldt he grass cutter works rain or shine.  As opposed to electric grass cutters, that are not supposed to be operated in wet conditions.

The non-motor grass cutter can also move faster than the standard push gas or electric powered mowers that move slowly.  

You can run with it, as it runs with you.

In the car, garage, or storagge, it doesn’t leak fuel.

If you need to transport the mower, it easily compacts, if using the handles, and doesn’t leak gas or radiation.

It doesn’t need time for battery re-charging, although, I give it a break when I take a break.

One Warning, is if you let the grass grow to over six inches in length and especially if it is thick green grass, it takes a lot of effort to get it cut.  Having a back up gas or electric grass mower might be a good idea.

Also, the method of use may be different.  For example, I pull it in rows, one way….. and then back over that same row.  And stems of bushes, trees, or dandelion flowers need to be cut by another way.

Comparasins

Comparatively, gas and some electric mowers cut most stems when cutting.  The gas and electric grass mowers usually only need to go over the row one time.  The noise, vibrations, and exhaust fumes are compromising side effects that may affect the user or operator.  The only stopage I experienced so far is the chain falling off.  I immediately stopped and fixed it.  

With the Fiskars Non-motor grass cutter, it has a guard over the chain and gears.  So, when I had been running over bumpy areas and the chain fell off, it was contained in the guard plate area.

How to Fix When The Chain Falls Off

I took the mower to the garage, got out my socket tools, removed the guard plate, cleaned off the gears and chain area, put the chain back on, oiled it a little bit, replaced the guard plate, and we were “back in business”, within an hour.

Conclusion

Do they work as good as the powered mowers and cutters?

Yes, they can.  If you use the grass cutter at the level for short grass, that is the number 2, two, or 3, three, level on the model I have, it works comparatively.  Although, like I said, each row may need to be walked or ran over more than once, and the stems of flowers or thick stems need to be cut with a different tool.
