Lawns and hair are not exactly the same, although there are similarities.

The non-motor reel grass mower cutters spin forward and downward toward the ground and grass leaving a cut that is not as even.
The direction after going over it with the grass cutter is seen like going with the grain or against the grain in woodworking.
The thicker stems and flowers usually need to be clipped with the grass shears.
